The Mizuho is a two-person tiny house that squeezes in a downstairs bedroom and a home office

One of the more enjoyable things about covering tiny houses is seeing each country’s take on the art of downsizing. The Mizuho showcases a Japanese approach to the concept, squeezing in a home working area and a downstairs bedroom into a compact footprint.

Designed by the Ikigai Collective, the Mizuho is based on a double-axle trailer and has a length of 6.6 m (21.7 ft). Its exterior is finished in a mixture of wood and coated steel cladding, topped by a metal roof. The model shown appears to be permanently installed and includes a deck that helps expand the living space, though the tiny house can also be mounted on wheels for regular towing, if preferred.

The Mizuho is inspired by traditional Japanese minimalism and unlike the firm’s Nozawa and Yamabiko models, is arranged solely on one floor. The benefit here is that it’s easier to get around and you don’t need to climb a ladder to get into bed. The tradeoff, of course, is reduced space, but the Ikigai Collective has done a good of job fitting everything in.

Much of the available interior is taken up by the kitchen, which includes a propane-powered two-burner cooktop, a sink, and plenty of cabinetry for additional appliances. Nearby is a workspace with a desk suitable for use as a home office. This seats two and can also double as a breakfast bar or general dining area.

A sliding door connects the kitchen to the bathroom, which i’s understandably compact, but it does include a flushing toilet, a shower, and a sink.

There’s no separate living room area in the Mizuho, so the bedroom doubles as a hangout space too. This is quite common with compact models, like the Escape Vista. The bedroom itself is situated on the opposite side of the house to the bathroom, near the entrance, and contains a double bed and a wall-mounted TV, plus it has ample headroom to stand upright, which is always a nice benefit in a tiny house. The bedroom lacks a screen or door for privacy, though there’s not really any space for any guests to sleep over anyway, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Shipping Container Delivery Guidelines

  1. 20 Foot shipping containers require a minimum of 80 feet of space to back into in order to slide off onto the ground in the desired area. A minimum of a 12’ width is needed for maneuvering.
  2. 40 Foot shipping containers require a minimum of 110 feet of space to back into in order to slide off onto the ground in the desired area. A minimum of 12’ width is needed for maneuvering.
  3. The delivering area must be hardtop such as pavement, asphalt, compacted soil, gravel and any other strong surface able to support a tractor trailer or flat bed to drive upon. The area must not be soft, sharp, have pot holes, overgrown brush or be hazardous to access.
  4. If delivering on grass or dirt, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather and avoid wet days and reschedule accordingly.
  5. Trucks are not able to jump curbs, back into steep inclines or maneuver around tight hills. Safety is the upmost importance during delivery. Drivers will not risk tight spaces to avoid damaging their trailers or private property. Trucks are unable to drive over leach fields, unsupportive bridges, restricted weight access roads and other obstacle based areas as an example.
  6. It is very common to place railroad ties, 2”x 4” s / 4”x 4” s or gravel pads / crushed stone at the drop area. Bricks and cinder blocks are not recommended.
  7. All power lines must be at least 14’ high from the ground for delivery.
  8. In the event a truck gets stuck in a soft area on the property, it is the responsibility of the property owner to resolve at their own expense for the truck to be pulled out by a local recovery service – please make sure the area is suitable for delivery and there are no obstructions.
  9. In the event a truck shows up for delivery and the area is blocked by vehicles, construction equipment, locked gates or has inadequate space for delivery, the cost for the full delivery and return is at the responsibility of the purchaser. Trucks waiting for an area to be made accessible may charge an hourly rate 30 – 60 mins after arrival.
